Bringing a New Dog Home: What to Expect

Adopting a dog is a beautiful and rewarding experience — but it also comes with challenges that many people aren’t fully prepared for.

When a rescue dog first comes home, they have often experienced multiple disruptions in their life: different environments, carers, routines, and possibly trauma or neglect. Their whole world has been turned upside down — and while you are ready to give them love and stability, they may need time to feel safe enough to receive it.

Many new adopters expect their dog to settle in quickly, bond right away, or "be grateful" for their new home. But in reality, most dogs go through a period of adjustment that can include fear, confusion, anxiety, or withdrawn behaviour. Some may become clingy, others shut down or seem overwhelmed. This is all normal.

Adopted dogs may also struggle with:

  • House training lapses or regression

  • Destructive behaviour or vocalisation

  • Sensitivity to new sights, sounds, or handling

  • Uncertainty around new people or other pets

  • Overreaction or shutdown during walks or in unfamiliar places

If there are other pets in the home, introductions must be handled carefully and gradually, with close attention to each animal’s comfort. Pushing things too fast can lead to stress or conflict, even with the friendliest of animals.

Above all, rescue dogs need time — and lots of it. Time to rest. Time to feel safe. Time to learn who you are. Time to heal.

Our post-adoption support session is designed to help you understand what your dog is going through, set realistic expectations, and put the right foundations in place for trust, safety, and long-term success.

You don’t have to navigate this adjustment period alone — we are here to guide and support you, every step of the way.
